SUMMARY

A Socket.IO vulnerability affects multiple Siemens industrial products. This vulnerability consists of a specially crafted Socket.IO packet that triggers an uncaught exception on the Socket.IO server killing the Node.js process allowing a remote attacker to cause Denial-of-Service condition in the affected products.

Siemens has released new versions for several affected products and recommends to update to the latest versions. Siemens is preparing further fix versions and recommends countermeasures for products where fixes are not, or not yet available.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

AI Model Deployer is the key application for automation engineers to deploy a trained machine learning model to Siemens hardware. It can import models from different AI frameworks, convert and optimize the models to Siemens hardware compliant format.

The Data Flow Monitoring provides the transparency of the data movement between applications installed on an IE device. It displays and records the connectivity between different applications installed on an IED.

LiveTwin Industrial Edge app allows the user to execute 1D simulations on edge devices and connect the inputs and outputs to different systems using already available connectors.

SIMATIC PCS neo is a distributed control system (DCS).

SIMATIC WinCC is a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.

SIMATIC WinCC Runtime Professional is a visualization runtime platform used for operator control and monitoring of machines and plants.

TIA Administrator is a web-based framework that can incorporate different function modules for administrative tasks, as well as functions for managing SIMATIC software and licenses.

WinCC WebUX is one of the components of SIMATIC WinCC which provides a solution for device-independent and browser-independent operator control and monitoring of the automation system.

Vulnerability CVE-2024-38355

Socket.IO is an open source, real-time, bidirectional, event-based, communication framework. A specially crafted Socket.IO packet can trigger an uncaught exception on the Socket.IO server, thus killing the Node.js process. This issue is fixed by commit 15af22fc22 which has been included in socket.io@4.6.2 (released in May 2023). The fix was backported in the 2.x branch as well with commit d30630ba10. Users are advised to upgrade. Users unable to upgrade may attach a listener for the "error" event to catch these errors.
